Musician RAYE appears in the new Netflix show, Black Rabbit, alongside folks like Jason Bateman, Jude Law, and Laura Linney. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s released a new cover with the show’s debut looming.
Black Rabbit is about an upscale New York restaurant and the behind-the-scenes machinations, but for our purposes, what is most interesting is the appearance of RAYE in the show, where she’ll play herself, a musician hired to perform at the titular restaurant.
To mark the show’s release, RAYE has released her cover of the jazz standard, “What a Difference a Day Makes.” The song is usually associated with Dinah Washington, though Washington used the title “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes.” (The 1959 album won Washington the Grammy for Best R&B Performance at the second annual Grammys.) The song was written by Stanley Adams and Maria Grever. RAYE’s version is a pretty similar cover, with the music staying put in its jazz origins and not including any of RAYE’s more pop influences.
In a press release, RAYE said, “I’m absolutely head over heels in love with Dinah Washington, who sang the version of this song I am most in love with. It’s always tough to cover a song sung by the irreplaceable, inimitable voices of the jazz age but I hope my love of the song shines through.”
The single is available now. Black Rabbit debuts on September 19th.
