Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” is a pop classic, equal parts glamour and gloom, and a sharp commentary on the obsession and isolation that come with fame. Released in 2009, the track quickly became a cultural touchstone, blending theatrical vocals with glossy synth-pop production. When Australian post-hardcore band Thornhill took it on for Triple J’s Like A Version series, the pairing was as unexpected as it was electrifying.

Known for their emotionally charged performances and dynamic rhythms, Thornhill transformed “Paparazzi” into a heavy, brooding anthem, swapping glitter for grit. From the first pounding drum hits to the crushing breakdowns, the band infused “Paparazzi” with a sharpened sense of urgency.

Frontman Jacob Charlton delivered a gripping vocal performance, replacing Gaga’s theatrical, controlled delivery with raw intensity and emotional depth. While Gaga’s original teetered between seduction and sorrow, Charlton leaned into the pain, turning the song’s melancholy into something more anguished. Musically, guitar riffs took center stage, with distorted rhythms anchoring the verses and melodic leads adding texture through the chorus. In place of the original’s synth-laced backdrop, Thornhill built a dense, atmospheric soundscape that felt both epic and claustrophobic, a fitting match for the song’s themes of obsession and pressure.

Lyrically, “Paparazzi” fits perfectly inside Thornhill’s wheelhouse. The band often explores the darker side of human emotion and societal tension. Their take on the song amplified the dread that simmers beneath its glamorous surface. The result is a cover that not only reinvents a pop classic but also fits naturally into Thornhill’s sonic evolution, showcasing their knack for reimagining familiar material through a darker, heavier lens. “It was interesting to figure out where we wanted it to have a heavy moment,” Charlton told Triple J. “But I think that came pretty naturally with some of the bridge work.”
