The All-American Rejects recently performed ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ as an Ozzy Osbourne tribute at Warped Tour in Long Beach. The original song is themed around reconnection after separation and love. It was first released in 1991, and the tune was co-composed by Ozzy and Lemmy Kilmister. The Rejects’ cover hits hard. Tyson Ritter’s voice is emotive and rich, giving meaning to each syllable.
He said before the band began, “The world lost a legend this week, man, Ozzy f***ing Osbourne. The Prince Of Darkness. Informed a lot of these bands on this stage, pretty sure it informed something about us. That man on the drums hits his cans because Black Sabbath scared the (shit) outta him and made him wanna hit some pig skins with ‘War Pigs.’” He continued: “He was an exceptional human. A father, a grandfather, and a husband. And we put this together because I thought that, when your dad’s a god, the family kinda gets lost in all”.
So this song isn’t just for Ozzy. It’s for all of those close to him who lost not just a legend, but a very real human.
