Peter Capaldi and Franz Ferdinand

You might know Peter Capaldi from TV shows such as his role as the twelfth doctor in Doctor Who or the thriller Devil’s Hour. But the Scottish actor and director is now dipping back into the music world. Accompanied by Franz Ferdinand, he performed The Cure’s iconic track “Friday I’m In Love” on Glastonbury’s Other Stage.

The cover was part of a special live session Capaldi recorded for a radio broadcast. In the confines of the closed session, the cover achieves a living-room intimacy from the first few notes. Originally released in 1992, “Friday I’m In Love” is one of The Cure’s most joyfully infectious hits. Its jangly guitars and upbeat tempo made it an instant classic; although somewhat unusual for a band associated with gloom and post-punk melancholy. It is a full circle moment for Capaldi, who was the frontman of Scottish punk band The Dreamboys in the ’80s.

In an interview at Glastonbury with NME, Capaldi spoke about how the collaboration came to pass. “I think we had some mutual friends who are musicians. I had been praising Franz Ferdinand, and Alex [Kapranos] just got in touch and asked if I’d like to play with them at Glastonbury! Who’s going to turn that down?”

Later in the festival, Capaldi joined his fellow Glaswegians in Franz Ferdinand for a rendition of their song “Take Me Out.” In terms of solo music work, Capaldi released the album St. Christopher in 2021 and the single “In Person” in 2022.
