Molly Gordon, the co-star of the hit TV show The Bear will be seen next in the upcoming film Oh, hi!. Gordon stars, and also co-wrote the screenplay. And she’s also on the soundtrack.
Gordon has teamed up with Blake Mills for a cover of the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers classic, Islands in the Stream. She takes the vocals for the song, and Mills provides back-up, consisting mostly of an acoustic guitar, drawing an immediate difference from the original’s duet between Parton and Rogers. Mills has collaborated with an impressive number of other musicians, including Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes and Bob Dylan.
Gordon said of the experience, “We only had a couple of hours to record the cover, but we had an immediate language… I feel so lucky that we get to honor one of my favorite songs with this witchy, folk version. I hope other people might sing this to themselves when they are trying to cast a spell to make someone love them (but also hope that they might discover that they shouldn’t have to do that ha!).”
The original version of the song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1983. It was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb (aka The Bee Gees).
Oh, hi! debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and is currently in limited release across the country.
