Queen Anne, the indie-pop duo of singer-songwriter Katie Silverman and producer Sandy Chila, released a cover of David Bowie’s 1983 anthem “Let’s Dance.” The cover trades the groove of Bowie for a western-tinged lullaby that feels cinematic and slightly unexpected. Silverman’s vocals carry a similar huskiness to Lana Del Rey, and are mirrored by moody acoustic tones. “Let’s Dance” is a kaleidoscope of funk, dance-rock, and R&B, designed to be slick, propulsive, and irresistibly foot-stompable. Rest assured, Queen Anne produces a cacophony of danceable melodies strung together with a heavy base and light piano dancing on top.
Fans of the TV show New Girl might recognize Silverman (as young Jess), or from her role as Stevie on PEN15. Now she moves with Queen Anne from the screen to the stage. Their music blends ’80s pop melodicism with a shadowy post-modern edge. Their next performance will be at Anzie Blue in Nashville on August 27th.
