Toni Cornell, daughter of the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, has released a heartfelt studio cover of The Beach Boys classic “God Only Knows.” Cornell might not sound much like her father, who is known for rich, deep vocals. But her vocal control is amazing and sounds stunning layered over an acoustic guitar and tambourine.
In a touching Instagram post, Cornell dedicated the cover “For Brian Wilson. Thank you for writing one of the most beautiful songs ever.” Wilson famously wrote “God Only Knows.” His passing was announced by his children on June 11th of this year. He was 82 years old.
This cover is Toni’s latest homage to musical giants, following her 2017 renditions of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Her debut single “Sunset of Your Love,” was released last year. Her most recent release was “Little Bitch” in May this year. Her own music blends alt-pop with acoustic and rock influences. She focuses on emotional storytelling paired with stripped-down arrangements. This cover is both a tribute and a testament, bridging generations of songwriters while offering a deeply personal take on a timeless masterpiece.
