Rita Wilson, the American actress and singer, has taken on Carole King’s 1971 Tapestry tune “It’s Too Late.”
This is the artist’s first release/cover since her bold single “W.O.W.,” and this one takes on an entirely different sonic flavor. If “W.O.W.” was neon pink and black, this one would be a muted celeste blue. In the track, there’s a bossa-esque acoustic guitar and bass (with a prominent bassline), delicate piano riffs, and a spacious, reverbed & ethereal backdrop to it all. Wilson’s lead vocals leave the perfect amount of rawness on top of the ultra-polished and locked-in harmonies. There’s a soulful guitar solo in the middle (just before we return to the lay-it-all-on-the-line verse).
This cover feels more smoothed out; it’s less pointed than the original, but still makes the same feeling arise in the listener. As one writer at Music Mixdown mentions, it feels like “revisiting a memory.” This version of ‘It’s Too Late’ brings up a motion picture in our mind. One that is hyper-saturated, yet slightly blurred from the wear and tear of time…
