Djo, the musical project of Stranger Things and Fargo star Joe Keery, delivered his debut performance on Triple J’s coveted Like A Version series earlier this year. His take on Haim’s sensual jazzy jam “Gasoline” swapped smooth swagger to dreamy tension. The video on Triple J’s YouTube is filled with comments begging someone to put the cover on streaming services, and fans’ pleading has finally been answered. This week, Djo released the cover for streaming on his own platforms as the producer and songwriter’s global tour returns to the United States.

Djo and his band eased listeners into their reinterpretation by splitting the song in halves: the first half reimagined in Djo’s own alt-pop style. Subtle synth textures and easygoing vocals sit atop a moody baseline. The last third of the song rises in power reflecting more harmonies from Haim the rhythmic swagger from original arrangement. While his cover is innovative and capitalizes on his vocals, the mash-up reflects his admiration for the original tune.

In the interview with Triple J, Djo spoke on what draws him to the Haim sister’s act. “I’ve got a big family, and the other song we played ‘Basic Being Basic,’ my sisters are singing on that so I thought it would be sorta cool to pay homage to them for that reason.”

Sonically, the cover shifts from moody synth-pop in its opening to a breezy, retro‑tinged groove before settling into a faithful groove-like second half. It marries R&B warmth, lo-fi restraint, and pop clarity. This cover is one more success for Djo, who released his second album, The Crux, in April, and has already been named to several Best of 2025 lists on Rolling Stones and SPIN. Most recently his conquered festival stages like Coachella and Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza in his Chicago hometown.

On top of the familiar connection, Djo praises the Haim single’s sonic composition, saying, “there’s a little edge in the song and I feel like sometimes in my own personal life I don’t allow myself to express that edge. But through the song, I feel like I can live in that for a second, and it feels good.”
