“In My Room” was first released in 1963 on The Beach Boys’ album Surfer Girl. Brian Wilson recalled, “I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you’re not afraid when you’re in your room. It’s absolutely true.”

In the hands of Chattanooga-based indie artist Catherine Campbell, this tune is twisted into a plaintive and ethereal chanson. There’s something so beautiful about the simplicity of the cover. First: the echoing acoustic guitar phases in from nothing. Then: her light voice effortlessly soars above the clouds, reminding me of Laufey’s “From the Start.” And finally, a subtle ambient noise builds up the texture to its final form.

As we reach the endpoint, a nostalgic piano makes its cameo. It resolves, and fades away.
