Amy Irving, best known as an actress but also an accomplished singer, has also been friends with Willie Nelson for over 40 years. Co-stars and lovers on-screen and off while making the movie Honeysuckle Rose, they have remained close ever since. As a public acknowledgment of their closeness, Nelson has helped Irving curate an album of his songs that best suit Irving’s voice and sensibilities, and have a narrative arc around friendship. The album Always Will Be will be out soon and the title track has now been released as a single. It is a lovely piece, further enhanced by the presence of Amy Helm.

Nelson has a vast catalogue, but finding the tracks that would fit both the theme and Irving’s vocals must have involved some very enjoyable trawls through album tracks and deep cuts. The original of this song is sweet and matter-of-fact; there is love and appreciation but, perhaps, not much passion. Depending on the history of your personal life that may be appealing. You might not need the drama, and may be willing to sacrifice the passion for some stability.

Irving, on the other hand, infuses the song with energy. She is exuberant about her friendship, and the joys that it brings. She is excited when her friend calls, so much so that she includes his voicemail announcing a visit to New York City in the recording.
