the zutons

The Zutons are a Liverpool-based indie rock band that have been taking the musical world by storm since 2002. When their ’06 original song “Valerie” took off, they gained attention from Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson; the end result was this classic cover (which went wild the next year, in ’07).

Now, The Zutons have redone one of Winehouse’s most iconic tunes: “Back to Black.” While the original was infused with 1960s-style pop harmonies, this version has a more forward-moving impetus, due to the cover’s bold, and quick-paced drums. Out with the heavy bassline, and in with mysterious, flawless vocals, and building suspense…As we enter the B section of the song, we feel the music metamorphose. The drummer goes hard on triplets while the rhythm guitar offers up offbeats. “Back to Black”, in the hands of The Zutons, is now a melancholic yet groovy song that reaches new heights with a kaleidoscopic delivery.

“We’ve always been proud of how Amy made ‘Valerie’ her own, and to have the opportunity to honor her in this way feels really special,” said The Zutons. “This version of ‘Back to Black’ has taken on a life of its own, and we’re excited to share it with everyone.”
