Jarvis Cocker, best known as the frontman for the popular Britpop band Pulp, pulled a unique and memorable cover out last Monday during a performance by Chilly Gonzales at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Together, Cocker and Gonzales, busted out a mournful and contemplative take on the Tina Turner comeback song, “Private Dancer.” The song was written by Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits.
While the audience found the mere fact of Cocker delivering some of the lines amusing, (“I wanna live out by the sea/Have a husband and some children/Yeah, I guess I want a family” gets a couple of giggles,) he played it completely straight, finding the pathos in the lyrics.
Cocker and Gonzales have collaborated in the past, most memorably on the 2017 album Room 29. His appearance at last week’s show wasn’t a surprise; Cocker was announced as a special guest prior to Gonzales’ performance.
