Coheed & Cambria‘s lead singer and guitarist Claudio Sanchez has covered The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” for his monthly YouTube series, “Claudio Covers.”

“This song was introduced to me by some friends as a cover done by Dinosaur Jr. They were skaters, so the reference to “tricks” at the top of the song conjured up ideas of a smitten lover’s curiosity for executing kick-flips and rail slides,” wrote Sanchez in message accompanying the video. “It’s a strange but powerful relationship to have with a song when your introduction is someone else’s interpretation of it. I think that’s why I chose Just Like Heaven for this month’s cover.”

Sanchez’ take hews pretty close to the original, and you can hear his respect for what The Cure accomplished with the song. Of course, Sanchez’ voice adds his own impression of Robert Smith’s lyrics.

Other songs featured in the “Claudio Covers,” series include The Smashing Pumpkin’s “Stumbleine,” and Adele’s “Hello.” The original version of “Just Like Heaven,” was released on The Cure’s 1987 album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and the Dinosaur Jr version came out on their 1989 EP Just Like Heaven.
