Country soul singer Swamp Dogg offers his take on a Beatles classic in an expanded edition of his most recent record.

Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th St was originally released in May of this year, on Oh Boy records. The deluxe edition released last week, includes a cover of “Rocky Raccoon,” and a new original song titled “Fools Like Me.”

Swamp Dogg’s cover of “Rocky” hews pretty closely to the White Album original, but puts a country spin on the song, adding accordion, mandolin and violin to the mix. The star of the show, as with most Swamp Dogg records, is his voice, which has an additional layer of emotion to the tale of the titular mammal.

Performing cover songs is nothing new to Swamp Dogg, who found himself on our lists of best John Prine covers (#6 for his take on “Sam Stone”) as well as best Bee Gees covers (#22 for his version of “I Gotta Get a Message to You”).
