Lunar Noon

Lunar Noon, the project of San Francisco-based musician Michelle Zheng, have released a mesmerising cover of Massive Attack‘s hit “Teardrop.”

In the opening bars, this cover appears to be one that’s vying to be placed in the background of a streaming services big and flashy tv show. Zheng’s vocals wrap around the iconic drum beat, accompanied by weeping violins and jazzy piano, perfect for that late night bar scene, perfected by the introduction of the double bass.

But as the track progresses, the sound builds, and it’s moved out of the background right to the middle of the screen, filling your ears as double tracked vocals swell into a full wall of sound, while still carrying the well-known melody. This one took me by surprise, and I’m sure it will for you also.

  1. It’s a cool trick to both sound faithful to the original and to make it your own thing. Thanks for this.
