Singer-songwriter Alex Warren’s many followers on social media appreciate his honesty about his past, optimism about his future, and ability to capture it all in song.  In his latest outing in his partnership with Sirius XM, he has added a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” to his repertoire.

Chappell Roan favors much more vibrant shades than lurid lime green, but she has taken a full part in summer of Brat, having set some of the tone for it in 2023. She wants everyone to get the chance that she did, to find a place where you can be your best self. Be with the people that you want to be with, she says, and they can help make you whole. She has a vision and is a vision in her drag-inspired stage persona. You can always join her at the Pink Pony Club, whether that is a physical dance club, a mindset, or a euphemism for getting down and dirty.

Warren dresses himself down, and he strips down “Pink Pony Club,” but he does not get dirty to give his reading. It is not a joyous celebration of self, nor is it an admonition of any of happy frolickers. Warren affects to be a concerned relative or friend, hand in pocket but sincere. Not necessarily with a desire to stop you enjoying yourself, but reluctant to join in himself, as he knows where the hedonism might lead. I’m not sure that Roan needs the concern, as she seems to be doing very well, but it is there if she needs it.
