According to a recent Disney announcement on YouTube…“Mickey & Friends introduce A Whole New Sound, an album featuring a selection of Disney’s greatest hits covered by iconic alternative, rock, and pop-punk bands. Join Mickey & his friends as they explore their interests in fun new ways.”
This statement has certainly gotten pop-punk and alt-rock fans feeling stoked. And while there isn’t an official release date yet, Simple Plan’s cover of the Elton John classic is a promising teaser.
Simple Plan’s version of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” begins with a bold acapella statement. The first phrases have warm vocal grit and satisfyingly blended harmonies. But it doesn’t stay calm for long. A drum fill is followed by bold power chord chugs, and suddenly, we get the feeling that we’re running wild, hair blowing the wind.
“Can You Feel the Love Tonight” has now become an anthemic pop-punk hit, full of bold energy and maybe even a pinch of anarchy. It sonically feels like the sentence “We’re in love, and we’re unstoppable.” As a whole, Simple Plan has taken this Disney classic and turned it into a contagious, rogue, danceable 2000s-style-era bop.
