Mamamoo is a South Korean girl group that is known for their vocal harmonies and strong musical synergy. From taking inspiration from Chinese rap and Latin to making compelling ballads, to say they’re versatile is an understatement. And recently, their member Hwasa covered the woman-loves-woman-themed song from Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft: her smash “LUNCH.”
In the video, Hwasa appears to be in a bookish bedroom. It is styled to look like it was filmed on an older camera with its wide black border, giving us all a vintage camcorder vibe.
When Hwasa begins to sing, we are all shocked. She mimics the light, airy, and sensual timbre of Eilish exactly. It sounds as if the artist used the original track’s instrumentation. As the offbeat guitar and ska-ish tune continue and mingle with her voice, we listeners lean in… but then the cover curtly ends at just 1 minute and 47 seconds in (leaving us all craving more, and wondering what the B section/bridge might have brought…)
