Meet Friko, a band that first began when some Evanston, IL grads got together and decided to start a project. The group currently consists of members Niko Kapetan and Bailey Minzenberger. The duo recently released a Radiohead tune tied to a European tour announcement.
Inside of this cover of “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” you’ll hear a collection of magnetic melodies and rhythms, and a hold-your-breath type break right in the middle of the tune. The lyrics of the song are very much centered around the ocean: its depth, as well as the concept of death paired with the feeling of complete stillness. And as we swim to the bottom with Friko, the music does indeed begin to take on a more aqueous, synergistic sound.
The original In Rainbows tune began with a drum groove and then added a triplet melody overtop. Friko added a bit of ambient background noise before they began, but they kept the forward-moving drums true to the original. In this version, the vibe is a bit more heavy overall; it’s a little rough around the edges in a sonically pleasing way. The second half of the tune has an enormous crescendo of guitars, strings, and eerie ahs. And, as the song fades out, we’re left with a faint dissonant *shrink!* of violins.
