Aloe Blacc (Aka Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III) is a versatile musician/rapper. After being featured in Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” he became very well known. And recently? The artist has been covering loads of classic songs. Think: “Seven Nation Army” and “Black Hole Sun.”
His most recent two drops include a funky, soulful version of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” and an R&B style cover of Oasis’s “Wonderwall.” Both covers/throwbacks were executed with top-notch sound quality, synchronous instrumentals, and rich soaring vocals. The version of “Wonderwall” has been infused with lush chordal hits, and includes horn blasts, sax riffs, and smooth jazz vocal backups. It’s been entirely reharmonized and made anew.
As for “Don’t Speak” this cover has a Chili-Peppers-feeling bass groove, another horn section, and a trio of guest vocalists to support it all. This version was performed live recently on the Today show.
His new album, Rock My Soul (Volume 2) is out now and includes this version of “Wonderwall.” The first volume includes “Don’t Speak.”
