The Gaslight Anthem is an American punk-rock/indie-rock band from New Jersey comprised of Alex Rosamilia (guitar), Brian Fallon (vox, guitar), Alex Levine (bass), and Benny Horowitz (drums). And recently? The four-piece group decided to take Billie Eilish’s early ballad “Ocean Eyes” and turn it on its head. The idea reportedly came from when lead singer/guitarist Brian Fallon’s daughter turned her dad onto the song. And the rest? History!
The cover begins with an exposed vocal line—which is haunting, and a bit gruff around the edges—but then the snare comes in. In the hands of The Gaslight Anthem, the once-mellow apocalyptic synth ballad becomes a driving rock anthem. The addition of the melodic guitar lead riffs paired with the chorus vocals far back in the mix and the overall vocal distortion create a completely new feeling. “Ocean Eyes” is now eerie, and pained, and energetic. It’s reminiscent of the vocals in Rise Against, the melodic-ness of Tom Petty, and even contains a bit of the iconic/bombastic rock of The Clash.
The group reunited last year to much buzz in the alternative and punk realms. The song is on the group’s upcoming EP, titled History Books-Short Stories, which was released on March 22nd.
