Arizona singer-songwriter Sydney Sprague recently recorded a Turnstile cover for a musical compilation that will help aid sea life. This song collection is called Changing Tides and will have proceeds directly go to a group called Sea Shepherd. What better reason to make music than to help save our ocean? And the theme of this song is all too fitting.
Turnstile’s 2021 release “Underwater Boi” from the album Glow On is trippy and punky, with its phasing synths, prominent drums, and, grooving guitars. The lead singer, Brendan Yates, has a soft almostindie vibe to his voice. Sydney Sprague took that seed of a feeling and ran with it. Where Turnstile’s original is more angular, Sprague’s is soothing. The artist took many liberties with the cover, both tone-wise and arrangement-wise… and the risk certainly paid off. The result? A cozy iteration of “Underwater Boi” that has lovely airy harmonies and just a pinch of strummy rock.
The artist posted a photo of herself with an oceanic blue background announcing the release with the following caption: “I love this song and when @ruderecords / @rudecares gave me the opportunity to pick a cover for the “changing tides” collection, it just made sense because uhhh, water. all proceeds from this collection of songs will go to @seashepherd‘s ocean clean-up project. so listen a lot!!!! it’s for a good cause!”
