Sloppy Jane is an American pop-rock group fronted by Haley Dahl. Sloppy Jane formerly included Phoebe Bridgers, who was originally their bassist. Recently, Dahl took on the emotive song “Cancer” from My Chemical Romance’s 2006 album The Black Parade. But this isn’t your average emo cover; Sloppy Jane takes it one step further.
As the synths and piano swell in, listeners feel a sense of nostalgia. Dahl has a remarkably flexible vocal timbre, which she shows off in the cover. As the opening words “Turn away” come in, she sounds like a female Gerard Way. But then she makes it her own, cracking and wailing into the lyrics, bending her vocal folds to her own will. This mournful version of the iconic song is surprisingly fresh, while also managing to honor the emotional pain inside the original. Take a listen for yourself:
