avenged sevenfold misfits

Did you know that Avenged Sevenfold releases a Misfits tune every year? As the rockers video description puts it, “It’s that time of year where Zacky, Johnny, and Brooks transform into fiends to bring you a new take on a classic Misfits song. Enjoy?”

Their latest, “Astro Zombies,” is a tune from the 1981 album Walk Among Us. It’s been covered by My Chemical Romance as well. The original horror-rock tune is at a sprinting tempo with satisfying lyrics and vocal depth by Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only jamming on bass, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein on guitars, and Arthur Googy on drums. Avenged Sevenfold’s version is a more modern take on the tune, and trades in that vintage fuzzy distortion for a more crisp hi-fi sound. It seems the bass is turned up just a touch, while keeping the deep, open vocal timbre that Danzig had. The result is a crisp punky head-turning cover.
