Day Wave is the moniker for musician Jackson Phillips, performing in collaboration with a rotating cast of other musicians, most notably Hazel English. Phillips’ latest album Pastlife was released back in June. During those sessions, he recorded a cover of The Cranberries‘ beloved 1993 single “Linger.”
Day Wave basically stick to the form and melody, but the song is otherwise stripped of its elaborate instrumentation. It’s just two guitars and a couple voices. The guitars aren’t played primitively, so much as played simply. And the vocals have a slightly lo-fi quality due to how they were recorded. It feels like a home recording even though Phillips has been recording for eight years. It’s a delicate and really pretty cover of what was already a fairly pretty song.
