Sleater-Kinney‘s third album, Dig Me Out, turned 25 this year. To celebrate, the band just released Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album featuring Wilco, St. Vincent, and many others. The second single from the album came from country singer Margo Price. For her contribution to the albums she’s taken on the album’s third track, “Turn It On.”

Price slows the song down a titch and relaxes the vocal delivery. But the really striking change is the instrumental palette which is, well, much broader’s than Sleater-Kinney’s two guitars and drums format. Price’s version begins with unlikely synth and loops but it’s also driven by banjo. (The band tweeted out they were unaware of any other covers of their songs featuring a banjo.) For the chorus, there’s slide guitar, among other things, and there’s even a slide guitar break before the next verse.

Despite the presence of some prominent country/roots rock instruments, it feels more like a contemporary rock take on the song, and it’s a fairly far cry from the post Riot Grrrl indie rock of the original. Check it out:
