The Grahams are an Americana duo based in Nashville but originally from the east coast. They have put out four albums over the last decade and have a new one dropping in October. But, before then, they tackled American dream pop band Mazzy Star’s oft-covered “Fade Into You.”
Their approach is to slow down the tempo just a tiny bit – for an already very slow song – and then slowly speed it up. And they drop the iconic slide guitar. Instead, they increase drums and percussion, to give it almost a throbbing, pulsating feel. Singer Alyssa Graham mostly follows Hope Sandoval’s original melody, though she gives a few of the words a little more panache. There’s a fair amount of additional instrumentation on the track, with multiple guitars in the mix and an electric piano. Though very faithful to the original, it’s a nice version. Listen here:
