cruel summer cover

Singer Jessica Boudreaux got together with indie rock band Adult Mom to remake “Cruel Summer,” off Taylor Swift’s 2019 album Lover. The musicians made the song less peppy and celebratory on their cover, doing away with the wonky panned synths and autotuned chorus “yeahs” choosing a more gentle and melancholy tone.

The changes this group made to the percussion gave the cover its most distinct new feel. The pronounced pop drumset was traded out for one with a much softer snare and hi-hat, as well as a less boomy bass drum. Soft clinky hand percussion added the icing on the cake in this department. By the time we get to the chorus, the bassline falls onto a soft bed of warm held synth chords and countermelodies. Instead of them coming in on the offbeats, the electronic instruments are stacked unobtrusively. The result is a vibing, sad-girl summer anthem.
