One of the stars of the bedroom-pop movement, girl in red, covered The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” early last week, only weeks after The Weeknd performed it at the 2021 Super Bowl halftimeshow. The Norwegian singer, known as Marie Ulven, covered the song after the release of her single “Serotonin” in the first week of March, ahead of her debut album if i could make it go quiet out April 30th. If she put half as much spunk and passion into her album as she did for this cover song, it is certainly a cause for excitement.
From the first note, girl in red dialed up the energy, the tempo, and the angst of the tune. The cover turns the passive-aggressive melancholic jam into a fully aggressive punk rock anthem. Although not as refined as The Weeknd’s original, girl in red brings a grittiness to the song and manages to push the energy even higher in the chorus sections. Her voice may not have the raw scratchiness of more experienced rock stars, but she makes up for the excitement and conviction portrayed through her voice. Every element of the cover is a celebration of the glory days of garage rock.
