If there was ever a year to go ahead and start the Christmas music early, this might be it. Christmas music means it’s almost Christmas means 2020 is almost, finally, over. And what better way to get started than with everyone’s favorite Christmas song “Little Drummer Boy”!

Alright, so this song can be a bit polarizing, but the Bird and the Bee surely aren’t, especially when they are joined by Dave Grohl in the titular role.

Yes, in what seems like an obvious move, the Bird and the Bee have brought the drums to the forefront in this song that professes to be all about a sick drum break and yet rarely features one. Grohl’s drumming here is about as understated as he gets, and yet it’s still shocking in the context of this song. It’s not a surprise to hear Inara George’s laid-back, layered vocals and Greg Kurstin playing some spacey keyboards in the background. George’s “puh-rum-puh-pum-pums” have some really interesting melodic and harmonic choices that keep the song fresh. The song finishes with Grohl on a quick drum solo that sounds great and is worth a smirk.

Overall the song works as a fresh take on one of the most covered Christmas songs. Check it out below, and then find the full Christmas album from the Bird and the Bee tomorrow.
