Remember when Lil Wayne decided to become a rock and roll guitar hero, despite clearly not knowing how to play the guitar? Or, before that, Ice-T first ditched rap in his metal band Body Count? There’s a new name to add that list: rising rapper Vic Mensa, who has just debuted a new alt-rock band with a heavy cover of the Cranberries’ “Zombie.”
Dubbed 93PUNX, for the year Mensa was born, the band came out of nowhere this month with this debut single. It clearly channels Bad Wolves’ cover of the same song last year, which became a big rock radio hit. Mensa wrote: “93PuNX is a band I created to express things outside of rap. We connected to zombie because we were born from violence. RIP Dolores.”
Listen 93PUNX’ “Zombie” below, and compare it to the Bad Wolves’ version too.
