It’s been a while since we got a great cover from the Joy Formidable (their older covers of Roy Orbison and Passion Pit are worth catching up on), but on their just-released EP Sleep Is Day they deliver a new one, of David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes.” They also cover the Misfits and their current tourmates, South African band KONGOS.

The EP is billed as all-acoustic, but their “Ashes to Ashes” is way more lush than that might suggest. Beautiful vocals swirl around strings, piano, and percussion (and, yes, an acoustic guitar) for a soaring take on one of Bowie’s most beautiful melodies. Strangely, “Ashes To Ashes” isn’t on the Spotify version of the EP, but you can stream it – as well as their covers of Misfits’ “Angelfuck” and KONGOS’ “Escape” – below.
