While it’s probably the biggest stretch your mind will have to make today, try to imagine Taylor Swift’s poppy, catchy, sugary “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” as an agonizing, melancholic, slow jam of a song sung with grungy guitar and vocals. Then imagine that you might kind of like the grungy side of Taylor Swift (pretty sure those words have never been written before). Then imagine that this actually happened.

In a “didn’t see this one coming” performance by Jimmy Eat World on Conan, the band takes on the pop queen’s hit single and somehow manages to turn Taylor Swift’s defiant tone into a lonely and afflicted one thanks to their impassioned performance. Who knows the motivation behind choosing this song to cover, but the original never sounded so tormented. Check it out below.

  1. This is so much better than Taylor’s annoying version. She will make more money from the older crowd.
