Killers covers are easy to come by and hard to perfect. There’s a delicate balance to the band’s oeuvre that’s equal parts synth-pop and old-timey Americana, a balance that’s often difficult to channel into any other sound.

Montreal’s Leif Vollebekk, however, does just that with his take on “Read My Mind.” Vollebekk beautifully orchestrates piano, strings, and winds with light, precise drums and a voice like woodsmoke to sound like a quieter, more introspective corner of the town that the Killers invite the listener to with every song. He keeps the song’s feel but fills it with distinctive emotion and realism, and builds a tone poem with every note. The track is a bonus from the deluxe edition Vollebekk’s latest album, North Americana. While the album is only available in Canada, we’re lucky enough to have the track streaming while we keep our fingers crossed for an international release.
