Rihanna‘s video for “Stay” was just released and it is safe to say that there were definitely some people on Valentine’s Day watching that video, glass of wine in hand, reminiscing about a special someone that is no longer in their lives. Cover Me favorite Jordan Corey has taken the heartsick single and mashed it up with Miike Snow‘s “Animal” and Classixx’s “Stranger Love.”
The original song has a vulnerability and rawness to it. Corey’s rendition starts quiet and soft, similar to the original, but then builds. Complete with looped vocals and beats on her SPDS sample pad, Corey manages to mash up the desperation of Rihanna’s “Stay” and the emptiness of Snow’s lyrics in “Animal” into a surprisingly hopeful song, completely encompassing the spectrum of emotions one may feel when unsure of their life decisions. If you are going to listen to any cover song today, make it this one.
