Former Disney star Miley Cyrus seems happy to be stepping out of her”child star” comfort zone recently with a string of mature cover songs. We heard from her a while back when she covered Bob Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome” and now she’s back with her cover of the 1950 James Shelton classic “Lilac Wine.” The video is the first in a series of many “Backyard Session” videos that Cyrus and her band will be uploading on her new re-vamped website.
While it may take her a little while to win the cynics over, she’s off to a great start with her hypnotizing “Lilac Wine” rendition. It strays away from previous instrument heavy covers, from artists like Jeff Buckley and Elkie Brooks, and instead highlights the songs poetic lyrics and Cyrus’ consistent and powerful voice. Cyrus is working hard to show how much she has matured, and this cover proves just how far the star has come from her “Party in the U.S.A” days. It’s relaxed, it’s honest and most importantly it’s going to blow doubters out of the water.

Elkie Brooks version of “Lilac Wine” for me stands out. Her vocal ability is fantastic.
