To cover elitists, there is a clear-cut difference between a cover of something and simply mashing up a song with one of the artist’s own (see: every other Top 40 song that features the chorus of an ’80s song.) It’s a seemingly impossible line to straddle. Mr. & Mrs. Fox manage to achieve the impossible with their brilliant cover mash-up of M83’s “Midnight City” and Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).”

The cover, which is featured as a B-side on their single “Glass Houses,” is seamless. The lyrics of The Breakfast Club’s anthem fit perfectly with the heavy synth and blips and bleeps of “Midnight City.” Instead of coming off as a mash-up in the style of Girl Talk, it could easily be mistaken for an original tune, which is what makes a cover brilliant.

If you were into this cover, make sure to head over to their Bandcamp to download more of their tunes for free.

  1. Great mashup

But haven’t they really just pointed out the creative vacancy of the M83 track.

We need more of the creative Mr and Mrs Fox and less of the sad derivative rip off music that they are exposing.
