Mashups are usually the realm of DJ’s, not singer/songwriters who favor acoustic guitars. Texas-based musician Aaron Kaufman is breaking the mold, however, with some creative mashups that pair a classic track with a modern hit. A few months ago he combined Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” with Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl,” and his most recent mashup pairs his takes on Gotye’s much-covered single “Somebody That I Used to Know” and The Beatles classic “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

At first, it’s not entirely clear how the two songs will mesh; Kaufman performs short segments of each track individually before cleverly bringing them together in the final portion of the cover. Kaufman has a pleasant voice that fits both covers well, and his economical acoustic accompaniment brings out the mashup of melodies clearly. Neither cover would be especially remarkable on its own, but Kaufman’s creativity in combining old and new gives both an unexpected sparkle. Watch the video below.
