When it comes to classics like The Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” there is definitely no shortage of covers, good and bad. The key, it seems, to covering a classic is being able to respect and capture the original, while also finding a way to add a little something new to the song. While this isn’t always an easy task, singer-songwriter Pickering Pick does a great job in his recent cover of The Smiths’ classic.
Let’s be honest, Morrissey isn’t the easiest guy to impersonate, which is why listeners will be so thankful that Pickering Pick didn’t try to do so. Instead his voice is a little less desperate and a little more subtle. It’s a little less dark and a little more endearing. The acoustic guitar gives the song a softer and almost more modern feel to it. While he sticks to the original in all of its lyrics and even sometimes in tone, it’s a refreshing cover in all of its delicate heartbreak and angst. It isn’t the first Smiths’ cover, and it won’t be the last, but it is definitely one of the better covers in a long while.
