Scottish folk-rock band Frightened Rabbit have appeared on Cover Me multiple times, covering everyone from Springsteen to Death Cab, but rarely do we get to post about someone covering a Frightened Rabbit song. Denver-based singer-songwriter John Statz’ fifth studio release, Old Fashioned, is due out on January 24th. On Monday, folk covers website Cover Lay Down premiered the only non-original song on the album, FR’s “Old Old Fashioned.”

The original song is a kick-drum fueled stomper that sounds increasingly desperate in its call to shun the modern world. Despite the old-timey feel he gives it, Statz takes the track even more in the direction of the simplicity extolled by the lyrics. Statz sings sweetly over both finger-plucked and sparse slide guitar with whispered backing vocals. The song becomes a lullaby rather than the plea of the original. The production is the only thing that doesn’t sound old fashioned about this version; you’re right there in the room next to Statz as he plays. This version is a wonderful companion to the original.
