It’s not hard to find amateur acoustic covers online, but it is hard to find ones you might listen to more than once. Happily, Pakistani artist Alina Ishaque fits into the second category. Her renditions of Coldplay’s “Fix You” and Elton John’s oft-covered “Your Song” have a professional polish that showcases her voice.

Ishaque keeps her covers simple, sticking to light accompaniment from guitar or piano. These arrangements let her vocals, which have a full, nicely mellow tone, take center stage. The only downside to Ishaque’s sound is that it might be a little too mellow for the tracks she chooses to cover. “Fix You” loses some of its poignancy in her trained delivery, while “Your Song” lacks the husky nuances of Ellie Goulding’s standout version. Ishaque has the talent to produce some great music; she just needs the right songs to sing.
