UK-based electronic musician Graeme Coop aka Birkwin Jersey has a knack for building soundscapes from snippets and samples from YouTube clips. Recently he was featured on NPR’s World Cafe Next promoting his first release on his DIY collective label Absent Records with two friends in the United States.
The Brighton electronica producer records single notes off YouTube videos and then constructs a song with the compositions of the notes. His original productions have a folk styling that is meditative and dreamy. When applying his technique to the written song he really shines. On his b-side cover of Joanna Newsom’s “Sprout and the Bean,” he takes the single from 2004’s The Milk-Eyed Mender and builds his own version. Have a listen and download the track below.
