When St. Vincent picks up her guitar to do a cover, she tends to knock us out. Her version of Big Black’s “Kerosene” in May is still being discussed as a touch point for new album Strange Mercy and her pair of Tom Waits covers in July should be as well. Her latest live cover swings in a different direction, to post-punk pioneers The Pop Group. At a New Yorker event a few days back, she performed their debut single “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” and, not surprisingly, slayed it.
Accompanied by bandmate Daniel Mintseris, Annie Clark attacks her Fender with jagged precision. The cut would have fit right in with Strange Mercy, roaring in an arty, contained-madness sort of way. Watch a video of the performance below.
