Zuccotti Park has had its fair share of musical guests since Occupy Wall Street began, from Kanye West simply walking through to Pete Seeger performing ‘We Shall Overcome.’ On October 23rd, Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright joined that group with an acoustic rendition of Madonna‘s “Material Girl.”

Dedicating the tune to Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, the two performed an impromptu cover of the classic pop hit. While not the most polished performance – both were reading the lyrics off of a print out – the cover did act as a morale booster for protesters. Some protesters, now known as the background singers “The Occupation,” joined in, making the performance all the more fun. Check out video of the very tongue-in-cheek performance below:

  1. Its a cool song, and I like how fitting it is for the protest. It bothers me that so many people were furious that Kanye and Russel Simmons, came out to the protest because they were in the “1%”. Not the 1% running the country, but still very wealthy individuals to say the least, but if Sean Lennon comes, the protesters are like, ‘its ok lets sing a song together’.
