Back in March, the A.V. Club began their latest Undercover set with Iron & Wine covering George Michael. Today, six months later, they wrap it up. In that time we’ve heard performances from the Mountain Goats, They Might Be Giants, the Hold Steady, and a couple dozen more. The final cover comes from Fruit Bats, who were forced to take Loretta Lynn’s “The Other Woman.”
Despite not knowing the song when they went in, Fruit Bats and guest Dan Hindman of Vetiver nail the heartbreak-country vibe with a hearty dose of harmonica. Originally written by Betty Sue Perry, the song’s best-known version appeared on Lynn’s 1963 debut and hasn’t been heard much from since. Point being, it’s not super surprising that this was the last tune standing (though the Decemberists said they considered it). Watch the final Undercover set, then revisit the full series at the A.V. Club website.
