As film buffs will surely know, this past weekend was the prestigious Toronto Film Festival. A lot of highbrow movie stuff happened, none of which has anything to do with us. What does interest us, though, is this cover Eddie Vedder, Régine Chassagne, and Owen Pallett did of Bruce Springsteen’s “My City of Ruins” up there. The performance occurred at a $1250-a-ticket fundraiser for Haiti relief organization Artists for Peace and Justice.
Vedder has performed “My City of Ruins” before, most memorably at Springsteen’s Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. He even released a recording of that same performance to benefit Artists for Peace and Justice. Now we can watch him do it with part of the Arcade Fire (Chassagne a founding member, Pallett a sometimes touring member). At the event, he also covered Cat Stevens’ “Trouble” on his own. Watch videos of both below. (via Consequence of Sound)

“City of Ruins” is such a great song, and I love Eddie’s cover. If you want to see maybe the most moving performance of the tune, look for Bruce’s version of the song at the 2006 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with the Seeger Sessions Band… and don’t watch Bruce, watch the crowd.
