Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” is perhaps best known for its loop sample of a baby cooing. The Brooklyn songstress Bell excludes this defining feature on her cover, yet this version of the Aaliyah chart topper is nonetheless just as catchy as the original (not to mention Anna Rossi’s cover).
Bell has been performing this cover live over the past few weeks and the band loved it so much that they decided to do a polished recorded cover. The full quartet recorded and produced the track themselves, with Russian native Olga Bell on vocals and Gunnar Olsen with drums and mixing. Instead of Prince samples, Bell relies on glitches, heavy synth experimentation, and well placed iPhone notification sounds. Just like Aaliyah, Olga has quite the range, and we can see that here as well. Check it out below.
