At this year’s Newport Folk Festival, Portand’s swinging roots rock quartet, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside was quite busy. Playing local clubs, the main festival, and the afterparty, the band was celebrating the recent release of their debut album Dirty Radio. During their set Deer Tick’s John McCauley joined the band for a performance of the title track from John Prine’s 1999 duets album In Spite of Ourselves.

During a Sessions at West 54th performance, Prine tells the story of how Billy Bob Thornton asked him to write a song for the 2001 movie Daddy and Them. Prine plays Billy Bob’s brother and wrote the song “In Spite of Ourselves” based loosely on characters from the film. The track features Iris DeMent in a wonderful back and forth play with the verses. Watch Sallie Ford and John McCauley capture the fun spirit of the song both with a full band during the day and as a duet at the afterparty. (via Brooklyn Vegan)
