Since breaking away from trip-hop collective Daughter Darling, Natalie Walker has released a regular flood of material. Wikipedia lists nine EPs and LPs since 2006 alone. In all that output, you’d expect a certain predictability to emerge. New album Spark, though, ends with a surprise: a beautifully constructed cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Galapogos.”

At first, it sounds like a standard pop ballad, perhaps a little overly emotive. Gradually, though, tricky programming and drum patterns emerge beneath the soaring vocals and strings to give it that trip-hop edge. Listen to it below.

  1. Beautiful !
I still play this song sometimes. It is a good choice for a cover.

  2. ….you meant underly emotive, right? the arrangement is nice and everything, but she sounds like a robot.

  3. Trip-Hop? Don’t make me laugh. Portishead is Trip-Hop. This is some shitty pop cover song. I find myself repeating the previous sentence quite a lot these days =/

  4. It says ‘Trip-Pop’, not ‘Trip-Hop’, for what it’s worth.

  5. Good Cover for a Great Song!!!
    Good Luck!!!

  6. awful, this has nothing to do with trip hop. sounds like katy perry ruining a really beautiful song. the original is amazing!!

  7. again, “trip-pop”, not “trip-hop” whatever the hell both of those are… This is not a bad SP cover given what’s out there, come on.

  8. Agreed, excellent varied tone in her voice. She brings another light to this beautiful song. I look forward to hearing more from her.

  9. One of my favorite songs turned into average monotone crap. Bleh.
